What initially attracted me to Il Menestrello when I went there twice in 2019 during my trip to Assisi was that it was a highly rated pizzeria. Two years later, I arrived late to Assisi and made a bee line for Il Menestrello to get a pizza. The location is tucked off a busy street so you might miss it but I wouldn’t if I were you. They have dining on the main level and down in the cellar which has a much more casual vibe.

Penne Alla Norcina
Pizza Carbonara

For my third trip here, I got penne alla norcina and pizza carbonara. I love carbonara so I figured I would love the pizza version. It was just ok. Honestly, carbonara is meant for pasta. Il Menestrello did an admirable job on the pizza but the egg of the carbonara doesn’t quite jive with pizza. That said, there are so many pizza options here and you will absolutely find what you want. The norcina (basically creamy pasta with sausage) was good. The flavors were all there, but I thought the sauce wasn’t as thick as I’ve had and liked before.

Overall, Il Menestrello is a good restaurant with a large menu sure to satisfy the tastes of all sorts of visitors. I didn’t enjoy my meal as much this time but I don’t think it had anything to do with the quality of the food. Sometimes I’m a bit too adventurous with my pizza choices.
