This is a place I have been wanting to visit since it opened about a year ago.  I love a good fish and chip place and was hoping to find the kind of place I remember when I was in the Air Force and would visit the UK.  The crispy fish, and the chunky chips with a good malt vinegar.  This is one time where I didn’t pair my fries with mayonnaise as I always did in Germany.  The location of this particular place was on the Wharf of Washington, DC, a newly renovated area of the district.  Previously it had been kind of run down and lined with older buildings, old hotels, and not much else.  Today the Wharf is a modern and bustling area of the district with many shops and restaurants.  Here Goron Ramsay opened not only his Fish and Chip shop, but not far is one of his Hell’s Fire restaurants, which I will visit one day.  This day, I happened to be in the district and joined a friend for a quick lunch.

Ramsay Fish and Chips offers more than just fish on the menu.  You can also order a combo choosing between chicken, shrimp, or fish.  Me, being the purist, went just for fish and chips.  The order came with two sauces that you could use for dipping the fish and chips in.  I chose the traditional tartar sauce, and my second choice was a curry dipping sauce.  While I enjoyed the curry sauce, it was the tartar sauce that really hit my taste buds.  It was one of the better tartar sauces that I’ve had with seafood, which surprised me because I’m not a big fan of tartar sauce.  This one was just full of flavor, and all the right kinds of flavor.  Most important it didn’t detract from the moist and flaky fish.  The fish itself was perfectly battered and fried to a golden, crispy color.  As you bit into the fish it had a very discernable crunch with succulent fish inside.  If you are wondering, it was Cod.  The fish was juicy, not dried out like some I’ve had in the past.  Just beautiful fish battered and deep fried to golden deliciousness.  The chips were good, more American fries than British chips, and they went well with the curry sauce.  Really, nothing to complain about here.  I look forward to going back to try the chicken and shrimp, the other sauces, and any other new items they may add to the menu.  If you are ever in DC and find yourself needing a quick lunch, then this might be the place for you.
