I originally heard about this place from a guidebook on Italy that described it as having indoor and outdoor options and appeals to Florentines and tourists alike. I’m not going to describe a meal here because I went to Trattoria Za Za (TZZ) three days in a row, twice for dinner and once for lunch.
I’ll start with the seafood risotto. I have never had this dish either in America or Italy. It was a little saltier than I thought it would be and the seafood consisted of clams and squid. It was fine but not great. I would have liked it more with some scallops or shrimp. Another dish I had was fried chicken and potatoes. I liked the dish a lot. The chicken was boneless and more like tenders instead of nuggets. One thing, however, that Italians don’t seem to utilize enough are dipping sauces and this dish would have elevated that much more with honey mustard or chipotle mayo. The mixed fried seafood with shrimp and squid was fine but unremarkable. The tortellini with truffle cream and ham were very nice. I love truffle dishes, and this didn’t disappoint. One thing that would have improved the dish was a thicker, creamier sauce.
For dessert, the waiter recommended their caramel and cream which I would call Italian flan/crème brulee. Served on a plate, it had a caramelized top with a sweet, thin caramel sauce covering the plate. The consistency was creamier than flan. The waiter was right and I ended up ordering it for my two dinners at TZZ.
Overall, it’s safe to say that I recommend TTZ. They have a huge menu that features all the Italian favorites and twists on favorites that I think will appeal to most everyone. If you want pizza, meat, seafood, or pasta, you will find numerous options in each category. One more thing, I chose to eat outdoors but “inside” their tent. It was beautiful, comfortable, and great for people watching.
