Oven Swiss Steak
Cube steak that is smothered in a beef gravy and mushrooms. Goes great with mashed potatoes.
Equipment
- 1 13x9x2 backing dish
- 1 large skillet Cast iron is preferable, but you can use an electric skillet also.
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs boneless round steak
- 4 tbsp All-Purpose flour 1/2 for steak and 1/2 for gravy
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 16 oz can tomatoes undrained and chopped
- 1/2 cup chopped celery
- 1/2 cup chopped carrots
- 1/2 cup chopped onion
- 1/2 tsp soy sauce
Instructions
- Pound steak in 1/4-inch thickness and cut into serving pieces
- Combine 2 tbsp of the flour and salt
- Dredge steak in flour and brown in hot oil in large skillet
- Remove from large skillet and place in a lightly greased 13x9x2 inch backing dish
- Add remaining 2 tbsp of flour to skillet drippings and cook for 1 minute stirring constantly
- Add tomatoes, celery, carrots, and onion and cook until thickened, stirring constantly.
- Stir in soy sauce and pour mixture over steak.
- Cover and bake at 350° for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until steak is tender
