I was really excited to try Succotash. The combination of southern cooking with Korean flare was enticing. But what really intrigued me about the restaurant was the menu. I love trying restaurants that mix classics with original, out of the box selections.

Dirty Fried Chicken
Dirty Fried Chicken

For my main dish, I was torn between the Fried Chicken and Waffles and Dirty Fried Chicken (DFC). Fortunately, the waitress said I could get the DFC and Waffles and, let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The waffles are very much an accompaniment to the main attraction, the DFC. The DFC was served as 2 legs and 2 thighs and were slathered in spicy gochujang sauce. The DFC is spicy but not overwhelmingly so. If you haven’t had gochujang, I would describe it as Asian BBQ sauce. But once you have a few bites, the spice subsides and the sweet Asian BBQ flavor predominates. It goes very well with the waffles and the cheesy grits which I got as a side order. I probably would not have been too impressed with the cheesy grits on their own but they really do complement the DFC and provide a salty element to balance the spicy sweetness of the DFC.

Hummingbird Cake

For dessert, I got the hummingbird cake. It could have easily fed 2-3 people. The flavor was good, but I thought it was a little dry. It needed either a whipped cream, compote, or maybe a scoop of ice cream. Overall, I enjoyed it and would get it again.

Overall, I loved Succotash and cannot wait to go back. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was casual. Hopefully they have jalapeño poppers the next time I go because that was one of the dishes I wanted to try and they didn’t have it when I went.
