I stumbled upon Taqueria Picoso on one of the those “best of” lists as it was said to be one of the best Mexican restaurants in the DMV. I have a go-to Mexican joint (hello, El Paso on Richmond Highway!) but, as a Texan, I’m always looking for new places to satisfy my cravings.

Chicken Quesadillas

Taqueria Picoso is all about small plates/mix and match. I had eyed a few dishes on the menu before I arrived, namely the chicken quesadillas chilaquiles rojos. To that I added the frijoles charros at the recommendation of the gentleman working up front. The quesadillas were ok. The taste was smokey with a little bit of spice, but I don’t think they were particularly memorable. The chilaquiles were again ok. I thought the flavor was fun and, again smokey, but the dish seemed simple and not particularly inviting. The frijoles charros were probably the best thing I ordered. Again, the flavor profile was smokey and a bit one note. That said, the chicharron were nice on top of the dish. I could have used a little bag of them to go with the frijoles.

Overall, I wasn’t impressed by what I had. They have a lot of variety on their menu and the dishes seem interesting, but I wasn’t wowed by the flavor. I do, however, plan to return because I want to try their tacos and tostadas.
