Fried chicken is one of my favorite foods. So, when I heard about Honeymoon Chicken (HC), I added it to my list of places I wanted to try. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect except that HC’s Instagram account posts tantalizing pictures of their chicken dripping in sauce.

To start off with, I got a 3-piece mixed original honey dusted combo which came with a honey butter roll. To that I added a side of mac & cheese and smashed potatoes.

I’ll start off with the only disappointment of the meal: the smashed potatoes. I don’t know what happened but the potatoes weren’t seasoned well at all and the gravy (which was good) was almost an afterthought. On top of that, the potatoes weren’t as cooked as I would have liked them. I know they’re smashed, not mashed, but they weren’t as tender as I would have liked. That said, I think if I had been given more gravy, it would have covered for the lack of seasoning.

The mac & cheese was a much better choice! Made with sharp cheddar, gruyere, parmesan, and fontina, you can really pick up the depth of flavor and variety of cheese used. It was nice and golden brown on top and creamy in the middle, just as it should be.

The original honey dusted combo was great. They give you big pieces of chicken that are juicy and crispy. It’s not flashy. It’s just chicken done right. The flavor gets inside the meat rather than just lightly coating the chicken skin.

I love a restaurant that treats bread with respect. Often times, bread is treated as a throw-in that neither adds nor detracts from a meal. Indeed, the honey butter rolls much more than an afterthought. In fact, they almost steal the show. Warm, sweet, and buttery, the rolls really complement the chicken and bring a sweet and salty element to the meal that leaves you wanting more.

Although I enjoyed my meal, given HC’s distance from my home, I knew I had to try their signature hot honey dipped chicken. I ordered another 3-piece mixed combo and didn’t regret it. It’s not really hot so if you’re not a fan of spicy food, I think you will enjoy HC’s hot honey dipped chicken. You get the subtle sweetness of the sauce combined with the crunchiness of the fried chicken. As my mom would say, “it made my tastebuds clap.”

Overall, HC was thoroughly enjoyable. It’s a little bit out of my way to be a regular customer but I’m almost glad it’s not too close because, if it were, I’d be there every week. There are a few other things I hope to try, including their sandwiches and chicken bites (I’m a sucker for boneless chicken), and I can’t wait to go back. If you’re looking for a new chicken place, look no further.
