One of the best meals I’ve ever had was at Locanda del Podesta in Assisi in 2019. In my return to Assisi in December, I knew I had to go back and enjoy another meal. The restaurant is unassuming and small and tucked away up a hill away from the hordes of tourists.
As I often do in Italy, I got a pasta dish (tagliatelle alla norcina) and a meat dish which the waiter described as bacon pork with roasted potatoes since it was not on the regular menu. The norcina was perfect. It was creamy with pieces of sausage and truffle. Again, simple ingredients and rich flavors are the theme here. The pork dish was thinly sliced and topped with a gravy and a side of potatoes. All the flavors were complementary. The portions on the pork dish were a little small. For reference, I had a decadent pork dish in 2019 at the same restaurant and the portions were quite generous.
For dessert they had a homemade chocolate lava cake in an Italian cream sauce that could only be described as divine. The chocolate in the Umbrian region (home of Assisi and Perugia) is first rate. The chocolate “lava” in the cake was extremely rich and was balanced nicely with the cream. In this case, less is more. The dessert was the perfect little sweet note to end the meal.
Overall, Locanda del Podesta is a place I will always visit when I’m in Assisi. They’ve got a great menu of local Umbrian specialties which will appeal to any person looking for a high-quality meal.
