El Rey is one of those fun places you want to go to with your coworkers after a hard day’s work. You can vent while drinking various libations they offer and before drinking be sure to try a couple of the many taco varieties they offer up. El Rey sits in the bottom floor of Ballston Exchange in Arlington, Virginia. With plenty of outdoor space, and inside, there is always room for a social gathering. The July day I went it was rather warm, in the 90s I’d say. So, what do you on a hot day, grab yourself a cold drink. I had the El Rey Frozen Special. The Frozen Special is half frozen margarita and half frozen Sangria, I chose Mango Margarita for my first half. It’s the drink you want on a day like it was in July. Cold, soothing, refreshing, and hit the spot. My only regret is not having a second one. When it came to ordering food, I settled on an order of queso fundido with chorizo, one Al Pastor taco, one Carne Asada taco, and ending it with a very tasty flan. I don’t know about you, but I enjoy corn tortillas over flour because I like the taste of it better, but that may just be me. Both tacos were delicious, especially the Al Pasto taco. The pineapple added some nice acid and sweetness as a background to the pork. Throw in a little pickled onion, and chipotle aioli, and you have a nice little package to consume. The Carne Asada was served with a tomatillo-avocado salsa, pickled radish, and onions. There was a lot of flavors in this one. From top to bottom it was a good meal, but more important a great place to meet up with people and let your hair down.
